bkawakamiBicycling enthusiast Bobby Kawakami especially enjoyed riding the hills. His grit and mental toughness defeated steep and agonizing climbs like those along Oahu's Kolekole Pass, his favorite ride.

On June 29, 2009, a car hit Bobby as he pedaled his bike to work. The impact tore Bobby’s artery, crushed his spinal cord, fractured a leg and punctured both lungs. Quick medical response, many surgeries and 103 units of blood products in the first week alone helped save his life.

Through the skills of his doctors, nurses and therapists, and buoyed by the love and support of his family and friends, Bobby is on the road to recovery. This ride is painful, and exasperating, but the same grit and mental toughness that got him over Kolekole Pass are helping him recuperate—and inspiring everyone around him.

"Throughout this ordeal, dad has remained positive and strong," said daughter Ivy Pescador. "He never complains, and the nurses, doctors and therapists love him. His positive attitude and his resilience have touched all of us.

"We want to thank the blood donors of Hawaii for giving my dad the gift of life. You selflessly, anonymously and consistently give to others in need. You gave me the gift of being able to tell my dad that I love him one more time. To have my dad with us six months after the accident was the best Christmas present in the world. Thank you for giving that gift to me and my family."
