Everyday in
Hawaii hundreds of patients count on volunteer
blood donors for their
very survival. The Blood Bank of Hawaii provides blood to nineteen
civilian hospitals throughout the state.
Mission
The Blood Bank of Hawaii’s mission is to provide a safe and adequate
blood supply for the patients of our state.
Autologous Blood Donation
Individuals can donate their own blood for their upcoming surgical needs
through autologous blood donation. One advantages of autologous blood
donation is knowing the blood type will match, even with a rare blood
type. The Blood Bank of Hawaii only offers this service to those who
have been prescribed this procedure by a physician.
Directed Donations
Blood donations that are designated to a specific person are called
directed donations. This type of donation can be done only if it’s a
medical necessity. If not, the Blood Bank of Hawaii is a community blood
center and provides blood to anyone in need.
Plateletapheresis Blood Donation Program
Hundreds of Hawaii’s patients rely on platelet transfusions to help them
recover from cancer, surgical procedures and other illnesses. Platelets
are special cells in your blood that heal your body’s wounds and clot
blood. This program enables donors to give this specific blood
component. For more information about plateletapheresis, please visit
this page.
Reference Laboratory

Hawaii for sample work for patients with antibodies. The laboratory also
provides antigen negative units and coordinates with the national blood
registry to provide rare antigen-negative units.
Hawaii Cord Blood Bank
Cord blood and the stem cells they contain are an emerging medical
technology and it is collected from the detached umbilical cords of
newborns. Blood Bank of Hawaii supports the Hawaii Cord Blood Bank by
coordinating the shipments of the cord blood samples and units to Puget
Sound Blood Center in Seattle, Washington.
Thalassemia Program
Thalassemia is a genetic blood condition can prevent the creation of red
blood cells and regular blood transfusions are needed by patients to
maintain a healthy lifestyle. Blood Bank of Hawaii supports the
Thalassemia Program by providing - on an on-going basis -
antigen-negative units for thalassemia patients.
