Coordinators Share Secrets to Blood Drive Success

Pearl Harbor FCU Carpools Donors to Dillingham
Jennifer Reis of the Pearl Harbor Federal Credit Union surpassed the blood drive sponsorship goal by carpooling 21 employees to the Dillingham Donor Center. The blood drives were scheduled on a day when offices are open half day, allowing donors to use company time to give blood. “All our employees really felt good about donating and were grateful that we made this as convenient as possible for them,” Reis said.

UH-Manoa Divides and Conquers
Glenn Nochi, University of Hawaii-Manoa coordinator, has been instrumental in building successful blood drives by forming a solid committee and dividing responsibilities. For each blood drive, committee members specialize in specific areas- parking, room arrangements, recruitment and reminder calling. Nochi also schedules blood drives at different locations around campus to tap into various sectors of the student and faculty/staff population. With Nochi’s help, UH-Manoa increased pint collection by 40% in the past two years. Pint collection increased from 1,872 in 2001 to 2,719 pints in 2003.

Iglesia Ni Cristo Adds Personal Touch to Recruiting
Mae Baldonado of the Iglesia Ni Cristo District of Hawaii-Pacific Office worked with ministers from the church to inform members about their upcoming blood drive. Their district and locale committees signed people up for donation appointments after church services and made personal phone calls to members to reach their pint collection goal of 70 pints. A potluck lunch was held at the blood drive for donors and staff, along with other health related activities like blood pressure checks.

Kaimuki High School Streamlines Donor Flow
Jeanne Chang of Kaimuki High School minimized wait-time and got students through the donation process as quickly as possible. She distributed the appointment list to all teachers, informing them of the exact time to release students from class for donation. In addition, students were given blood drive passes to present to their teachers once they returned from donating. As a result, there was a “nice steady flow” of students who showed up on time and got back to class in a timely manner.
