Saint Francis Student Finds Personal Meaning in Coordinating Blood Drive Aubrey Nera was passionate about hosting a blood drive, even though she already met Saint Francis School’s graduation requirement of 100 community service hours. “My dad needed blood after his car accident in 1991, when he was hit by a drunk driver,” Nera said. “The blood drive was very personal and I knew it would be an excellent way to give back to a community that made sure there was blood when my dad needed it.”
Nera worked with other seniors to publicize the drive and personally recruit friends and their families to sign up for blood donation appointments. Because of her efforts, Saint Francis School exceeded its goal of 25 pints for Hawaii's patients. Nera’s community service background includes providing child care for children of young parents. Her exemplary service caught the attention of the media and was featured in a television news story by Tanya Joaquin of Channel 2 News. |
