Competitors Unite to Help Save Lives

Jaelene K. Kaaa, of the accounting firm Horwath Kam & Company, donates blood during the accounting industry blood drive on Jan.7 at the Downtown Donor Center.

Professionals in competing companies banded together last month, participating in blood drives for their specific industry rather than limit blood drive participation to members of a single firm, all to help meet the needs of Hawaii's patients during January.

KPMG Partner Alton I. Ohira, encouraged many of his colleagues from the accounting industry to work as a team to help save lives on January 7th. “I made personal phone calls to accountants I knew from other firms and explained that we have a chance to do our part in meeting the urgent need for blood,” Ohira explained. “I encouraged them to organize their staff and schedules to participate and they were ready and willing to help.”

Ohira’s office staff was notified of the special blood drive by emails. Each employee was also contacted by his secretary to schedule appointments.

Accounting, architect, financial planning and insurance industry drives were slated for each Monday in January.

If you would like more information on conducting a blood drive within your industry, please call the Blood Bank of Hawaii donor services department at 848-4753 or 848-4759.
