I have a Headache. Can I Donate?

It's important to be healthy when you donate blood. If you're not feeling well, even if you just have a mild headache, it's best to wait until you are symptom free to give the gift of life.

Your headache could be due to menstrual cramps, fatigue, or lack of caffeine, but it also could be a symptom of many illnesses, from a common flu that's here today and gone tomorrow to the potentially fatal West Nile Virus. While the chances that your headache is related to something serious are slim, the Blood Bank will defer donor with headaches to protect both the safety of the donor and the blood supply.

If you are deferred due to headache, you can come back to donate the day after your headache subsides.

If you experience any cold or flu symptoms, including a headache, within 14 days of giving blood, please let us know by calling our nursing department 845-9966 ext. 739.
