The Best Hour of Your Day

How long does it take to save three lives? According to blood banking industry standards, the donation process, which includes paperwork, a medical history interview, the actual collection of blood, and any waiting periods in between each step, should take about an hour.

“Allowing a full 60 minutes, from the time you turn in the donor questionnaire to completion of the blood donation, protects the safety of both the donor and the patient who will receive the blood,” explained Blood Bank of Hawaii President & Medical Director Robyn Yim, M.D. “We are asking that all donors allocate this amount of time for each appointment. There aren't many ways to make such a big difference in the lives of others in such a small amount of time, so the hour is very well spent.”

We greatly value the time of every person who comes to the Blood Bank of Hawaii or one of our company or community blood drives to give the gift of life. The 60 minute standard is our goal for every donation, at all locations, with the exception of high school drives, which are known to take longer due to the high number of first time donors and other factors. Donations that take significantly more or less than 60 minutes will be thoroughly reviewed. Thank you for your support as we strive to uphold the highest standards of safety.
