Some of My Potential Donors Are Afraid They Might Faint. Why Would This Happen?

Most people feel fine after donating blood. However, a small percentage of donors may feel dizzy or faint during or shortly after the donation process.

This is caused by improper hydration. Some individual's are more sensitive than others to a loss of fluid. Nervousness and the lack of sleep can exaggerate these symptoms.

Our nursing staff is especially trained to care for donors in these situations.

To ensure a pleasant donation experience, donors are encouraged to do the following:

Before donating:

1. Drink 8 to 10 glasses of water.

2. Get adequate rest.

3. Eat a healthy, hearty meal.

After Donating:

1. Rest on the donor bed for three to five minutes before getting up.

2. Drink plenty of fluids.

3. Refrain from strenuous
exercise or heavy lifting for 24 hours.

4. Eat a healthy, hearty meal.
