Five Reasons to Plan Now for 2005 Blood Drives

Has your company, school or organization made a game plan for saving lives in 2005?
With only three months left in 2004, most organizations including Lifesaver Clubs are already planning for next year. Here are five reasons why this is a good time to contact your Blood Bank of Hawaii representative to talk about your blood drive plans plans now.

  1. Secure your preferred dates
Many churches, schools and businesses have a full calendar before the year begins, often booking facilities way in advance. We want to do our best in accommodating your requests to hold blood drives, especially if only a few select dates will work for your Lifesaver Club. Some organizations prefer to hold blood drives on specific days like Valentine’s Day, Halloween or the company anniversary date.
  2. Help at times when you’re needed most
Some companies may not have preferred dates for blood drives, but want to help when they’re most needed. A BBH representative can point out dates where low donor turnout or high blood usage are expected.
  3. More time to plan, promote and recruit
Planning the exact number of blood drives and collection goals for the coming year will give you time to make it fun, eliminate last minute rushes and provide lead time to coordinate special events or recognition programs for employees who participate in all blood drives in 2005.
  4. Build on the momentum
As you wrap up 2004, this is a good time for coordinators and blood drive committees to evaluate blood drive logistics and recruitment strategies, then kick it up a notch. Were your pint collection goals met? How was the donor experience? Your BBH representative can help you get a winning game plan together and continue to make blood donation a rewarding experience for your organization’s donors.
  5. Kick off 2005 with your company’s commitment to save lives
Get your committee and your company to think about blood donation from the very beginning of 2005. Plan on sharing information throughout the year that will inspire them in monthly or quarterly newsletters and publications.

Wiley is often consulted by a BBH representative for feedback on community participation and input on blood drive locations. He has also assisted the Blood Bank in contacting blood recipients that would like to share their story or express their gratitude. “I'm unable to donate blood, but I understand how important it is to give the gift of life. I really enjoy volunteering in this capacity on the Friends for Life committee and will always encourage others who can give to donate or volunteer to recruit if they cannot give,” Wiley said.

The Waikiki Beach Marriott Lifesaver Club worked with their BBH representative to plan blood drives on four holidays when their help was needed most. Advanced planning enabled them to design a recognition program for donors who participated at all four drives.
