Why is There a Deferral Period for a Person with a Tattoo?

A donor is temporarily deferred for one year after receiving a tattoo because of the increased risk of Hepatitis C and other infections associated with the possibility that unsterile needles may be used for tattoos and body piercings. Hepatitis C is a disease that can severely damage the liver.

The risk of acquiring any infections from a tattoo or piercing is minimal, if done professionally. However, the Blood Bank of Hawaii is committeed to upholding the highest standards of safety for Hawaii’s patients.

Is there a deferral period for body piercings?
For the same reasons explained above, body piercings also have a 12-month deferral period from the time of the procedure. Ear piercings using a single use stud are acceptable, provided they are done by a licensed facility.

If donors have any questions regarding their eligibility to donate, please have them call the Blood Bank of Hawaii at 845-9966 (Neighbor Islands 1-800-372-9966).
